Flour + Co. Sweetens Up Nob Hill

Just in time for spring picnic action, new bakery and sandwich shop Flour + Co. has opened its doors as of today. Helmed by former La Boulange operations director Emily Day, the bakery portion features morning treats like biscuits, muffins, and cinnamon rolls, as well as more decadent sweets like cookies, cakes, and pies. A handful of items are also available in gluten-free versions, and pie and cookie dough will be for sale to take home. Other breakfast fare includes a daily rotating “egg pie” (a.k.a. quiche), granola, yogurt, and Stumptown coffee. At lunchtime, sandwiches, savory tarts, and chicken pot pie are available. They’re also offering something unique, a charity donation box, with a matching grant of up to $250 per month.

The bakery is petite, with 16 seats and a cheerful beige and robin’s-egg blue color scheme. The concept was designed by Abueg Morris Architects, who’ve also done spots like Roam Artisan Burgers and Bun Mee. There’s definitely a corporate branding element at work as well, with murals featuring main character Flour and her anthropomorphic pals Butter, Sugar, Eggs, and Milk. (May we humbly suggest a Hamburglar/Bananagrabber-type addition?) Opening hours are currently 6:30 am-6 pm, according to Day’s blog, but are subject to change.

TRIBUTE TO A LEGEND... CECELIA CHIANG -- Alice Waters once noted that Cecilia Chiang did for Chinese cuisine in America exactly what Julia Child did for French cuisine - each was a Grande Dame of food whose influence is difficult to overestimate. An emigré to the US during the
years of the Communist Revolution, Chiang's seminal San Francisco restaurant, the Mandarin, exposed an entire country to authentic cuisine never before seen in the States. A single mother who spoke little English, Chiang faced incredible challenges but persevered to become an icon of the food world. Join us as some of Chiang's biggest fans cook a once-in-a-lifetime meal to pay tribute to this great lady. Chefs Daniel Boulud, Tyler Florence and Nancy Oakes will prepare multiple courses paired with many great wines including Cristal of Champagne Louis Roederer.
EAST VS. WEST BATTLE OF THE COASTS -- The East vs. West Coast culinary feud has established itself as one that will live on forever in culinary
infamy. While the top chefs from either coast may casually disregard the existence of any underlying feelings of supremacy, it seems the uniquely unsubtle air of hostility is deserving of a bicoastal battle.
MELANIE DUNEA'S MY LAST SUPPER DINNER - Jonathan Waxman, Masaharu Morimoto, Michelle Bernstein, Paul Bartolotta -- When the world's greatest chefs were asked in photographer Melanie Dunea's book My Last Supper to share their desires for the ultimate meal, the answers were surprising. Some wanted hot dogs and spaghetti, while others craved foie gras and black truffles. Join Melanie and chefs Masaharu Morimoto, Michelle Bernstein and Jonathan Waxman at Pebble Beach Food and Wine as they prepare their
fantasy

American Families, Celebrity Chefs Fight Hunger on World Food Day

Today is World Food Day, and 32.5% percent of children in developing countries suffer from malnutrition.

Celebrity chefs, religious leaders and families across the United States will team up with international relief and development organization Oxfam America to fight global hunger in honor of World Food Day. Renowned chefs including Jose Andres, Jamie Oliver and Lidia Bastianich are supporting a week of action organized by Oxfam America’s GROW campaign that will include events across the country.

“There is nothing more important to me than fighting for a world where everyone has enough to eat,” said Chef Jose Andres, Director and Chair of the World Central Kitchen. “I’m proud to work with Oxfam America’s GROW campaign to help make it easy for everyone to get involved and take action in their own homes and communities.”

Oxfam’s week of action will not only raise awareness, but will also bring about hundreds of solutions-oriented events large and small in cities and towns around the country:

 • Using recipes specially designed by prominent chefs like Mario Batali and Aarti Sequeira, hundreds of families will host family meals that follow Oxfam’s GROW Method, 5 simple changes to how we buy, prepare and store food to help fight hunger in our daily lives.
 • Restaurants in 15 cities will host meals that follow the GROW Method organized by Grubwithus, the social network for connecting real people in the real world over really good food. Visit: http://www.grubwithus.com/oxfam to find a restaurant in your town.
 • Chef Jose Andres will join Oxfam to host a special GROW Method lunch at the World Food Prize in Des Moines Iowa featuring women farmers from Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
 • Sex in the City’s Kristin Davis joins Oxfam America’s president Raymond C. Offenheiser at Google’s Los Angeles offices for a World Food Day themed Google Talk at Google headquarters.

Oxfam is providing World Food Day materials, including placemats, celebrity chef recipe cards, banners and stickers at no cost for those who would like to host their own event at http://www.oxfamamerica.org/worldfoodday.

The GROW campaign aims to help American families connect to small scale farmers around the world to build a more fair and equitable global food system. World Food Day helps engage individuals, companies and governments in actions that will help achieve this vision.

“Nearly one in seven people around the world go to bed hungry every night, not because we don’t have enough food for everyone, but because of inequality in access to resources and opportunity,” said Raymond C. Offenheiser, President of Oxfam America. “We have more power as individuals than we realize to change things. World Food Day is the moment to seize this power and demand changes that will reduce inequality, fight hunger and help build a world where everyone has enough to eat now and in the future.”

Restaurants hosting meals for World Food Day include:

 • Columbus, OH – Black Street Bistro
 • Minneapolis, MN – Red Stag SupperClub
 • Los Angeles, CA – Stella Rossa
 • San Francisco, CA – Source
 • Seattle, WA – Plum Vegan Bistro
 • Albuquerque, NM – Slate Street Cafe
 • Chicago, IL – Karyn’s on Green
 • Austin, TX – Salty Sow
 • Madison, WI – Graze
 • Kansas City, MO – The Westside Local
 • Indianapolis, IN – Pure Eatery
 • Burlington, VT – Farmhouse Tap and Grill

Maestro Cares Raises Over $100,000 for Orphaned Children in Latin America

On Monday, August 20, 2012, the Maestro Cares Foundation, in partnership with Blackberry, Goya, and the Dominican Republic Department of Tourism, hosted 200 guests for the organization’s first ever Chicago fundraiser. Held at the Sofitel Water Tower, in the heart of the city’s Gold Coast, the red-carpet event raised over $100,000 for the development of a new residence hall for orphaned children in the Dominican Republic. The evening included special appearances by global pop icon and Maestro Cares co-founder Marc Anthony, entrepreneur and co-founder Henry Cardenas, Formula One driver Esteban Gutierrez, and actor Luis Guzman.

Live music was provided by a jazz quartet followed by a DJ. Gourmet hors d’oeuvres and catering were sponsored by the Sofitel Water Tower.

Guests and supporters of the event bid on a number of unique auction items and experiences including a signed soccer jersey by Lionel Messi and the Argentinean National Team, a necklace by world renowned designer Oscar de la Renta, a helmet signed by Formula One driver Esteban Gutierrez, a signed guitar by rock band Mana and front-row tickets to Anthony’s current international tour, GIGANT3S, with a Meet-and-Greet opportunity following the show, among other items.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the completion of a new residence hall and learning facility for over 200 children living at Orfanato Niños de Cristo, an orphanage in La Romana, Dominican Republic. The Dominican orphanage will be the first territory to directly benefit from the Maestro Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization established to benefit charitable organizations in developing Latin American countries. Maestro Cares seeks to offer assistance to orphaned and disadvantaged children while supporting social services and other development programs.

“The creation of Maestro Cares is a testimony to the wonderful spirit of Mr. Anthony and Mr. Cardenas,” said Sonia Hane, Founder of the Orfanato Niños de Cristo. “The commitment of these gentlemen is an inspiration to us, and I am confident that the impact of Maestro Cares will be felt by the children in this country for many years to come.”

It’s back! The KCRW Summer Pledge Drive begins today and this time, the station has given themselves a lofty goal – donate 150,000 meals to the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank by Aug. 24.

KCRW’s Winter Pledge Drive was the first time the station partnered with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and were shocked by the enthusiastic response. Proceeds from sales of the dessert will benefit the food bank.

“It has always been important for me to give back to the community, and for the past two years, the Food Bank, Harris Teeter and I delivered Thanksgiving meals to children and their families at Boys & Girls Clubs,” said Beason, via a pre-taped recording played in front of 700 guests attending Chef’s Best. “It was amazing to experience the joy expressed by those children when they accepted the holiday dinner…”
