Paula's Pendulum
In 1851 Jean-Bernard-Leon Foucault debuted at the Panthéon in France what would become known as Foucault's pendulum. This simple, large pendulum was attached at its top with a universal joint. Unlike the more familiar construction of the pendulum of a grandfather clock, the universal joint allows the Foucault pendulum to swing freely in all planes. Watching the figure the pendulum inscribes as it moves, it appears to any observer that the pendulum is rotating.
In reality, the pendulum, now free to cut a true plane, is swinging back and forth in the same plane; it is the earth’s rotation that is described by the device. It only appears to move to the observer, because the observer is moving with the earth as it rotates about its axis. The illusion is a result of the effect of the observer’s perspective and frame of reference. The pendulum also describes the revolution of the earth about the sun and in theory the motion of the solar system within the galaxy and so on... more
